1. All strippers have issues.
I touched upon the weird and wonderful world of strip club clientele and the reasons people enter strip clubs. There are many reasons but tits and arse are not always the sole driving factor for a guy to walk into the club. There are the ones that just want to talk; about the fact their boss/wife/cat doesn’t appreciate them or that Dave at the golf club didn’t make them club secretary. Strippers very often end up listening to customers about their issues not the other way round, to the point that dancers should probably get some kind of certification in counselling and social care on completion of 2 years on the job.
2. Strippers are dirty.
Do people have any idea how much preening and primping goes into being a fantasy figure?! Apparently not. It is such a contradiction that strippers make their money being attractive yet are stereotyped as being dirty. A stripper with poor personal hygiene is not going to make anything bar the odd novelty dance from a stag party wanting to make fun of the stag. An exotic dancer will always have baby wipes and breath freshener in their bag to make sure she can keep fresh at work and hand sanitiser is also an absolute God send. If only customers were as considerate….
3. Go to a strip club, pick up a stripper…
This is one of the most ridiculous misconceptions about strippers and the strip club industry. Lap dancers are very hard to string along with a chat up line. FACT. Every cheesy line and pick up approach is heard by dancers day in, day out, it’s part of the job after all. What many people don’t realise is that it is far easier to pick up a more naive girl in a nightclub, bar or the supermarket than it is in a gentleman’s club. Strippers are strippers in the club, out to make a living and then they go home back to their day to day lives of study, or the school run, or their day job just like any other woman. Like any other job they are there to make sure their bills get paid. They stroke an ego for some cash and get on with their lives. Not waste their time arranging a date with a drunk guy with a BO issue and a beer gut he can’t see over because ‘he will never let any woman he is with be a dancer’. Thanks for the offer, but I would rather put chilli in my eye.
4. Strippers are stupid.
Making conversation with a complete stranger, adapting to whatever they are interested in and using that to your financial advantage? Of course, any idiot can do that! There are many girls that fall under that old chestnut of student or respectable(!) professional by day, moonlighting as ‘Precious’ in the club by night. I have come across student doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers, accountants, artists, musicians, trainee stunt woman (this actually happened once)…the list is endless. All these women were paying their way and using stripping as a stepping stone to their future career. Intelligence should also never be deemed purely by academic success and there are some seriously streetwise, smart cookies in the club where stripping is a side business to their enterprising ambitions.
5. Strippers and Hookers are the same thing.
Stripping and hooking is most definitely not the same thing. Yes, they both come under the spectrum of sex work but they are two very separate lines of work with different skill sets required. I have worked in clubs where hookers have tried dancing and given up after a few hours. They can’t deal with the talking and the selling and much prefer having prearranged bookings where they do their thing and walk away. The majority of lap dancers would never dream of engaging in prostitution, for a lot, even touching is gross. However, chatting to sell a dance (or even be the dance) and nudity is no issue. Don’t confuse the two.
