Picking your stripper clothes…
For a job that entails nudity, what you wear is still important. You can do a portion of the sell by making customers want to see what’s underneath. I have touched upon presentation in another blog article. I will continue to go with the theme of what you feel comfortable with.
There are some common dress codes that occur within clubs for the lap dancers.
Lingerie and stockings and keeping it sexy.
‘Wear what you like’ usually ends up with the majority of strippers wearing lingerie and bikinis. This is because they tend to be easy to source without spending hand over fist in speciality shops or dressmakers. Some clubs do like lingerie specifically.
If this is the style you prefer to go with, just bra and knickers do not look the most professional; Stockings, suspender belts, accessories (such as belly chains and big jewellery) prevent you from looking like you just walked in off the street and decided to give it a go!
Having extra items of clothing also helps in the dance as there is more to work with to create a sensual atmosphere. After all, the striptease build up is key and being naked should be the grand finale…A thong underneath a sexy pair of french knickers and a bra underneath a corset adds layers, and therefore anticipation, and you can use these items as props in your dance, adding to the tease.
Hiding problem areas
The extra clothing can also be used to your advantage in disguising areas you may not be the most comfortable with. Waspies are fabulous if you aren’t so keen on your midriff and something you can keep on whilst still going nude. If you aren’t so happy with your legs, stockings can be great at covering cellulite or stretch marks (or unshaven legs!) and again can be kept on during a dance. If you opt for a suspender belt, a great tip is to wear your knickers over your suspenders so they can be kept on throughout the dance.
A lot of clubs go for half and half. They allow lingerie after a certain time of the night when the club is busier and the clientele changes. Beforehand they specify long dresses and gowns. Some specify only gowns on the club floor to keep it looking classy.
There are many brands that can be bought online and many clubs have dressmakers that come in for the girls. Bright colours, UV and sparkle look amazing under club lights and make you really eye catching as you walk across the floor.
Dresses come in a variety of styles, and there will be something out there that suits you if you shop around. If you don’t go to stripper brands specifically, remember that the material needs to be stretchy (as if you work well then it comes on and off a lot), easy to get on/off and decent quality to withstand the wear and tear of dancing in it. Again, the mantra of what you feel comfortable in. Two pieces if you have great abs, long slits if you have great legs and fishtails if you are a classic hourglass.
Variations on a theme
There are variations on the themes and short dresses, baby dolls, bodysuits and fantasy outfits are also used by exotic dancers for their work uniform. It should be noted with fantasy outfits that there is a fine line between tacky and looking you are on a hen night; and sexy. The ideal setup is sourcing a costume from a specialist costume maker or brand where the themed outfit is made with a club in mind. Sequins, matching themed lingerie and other embellishments make all the difference. If you are handy with a needle and thread then get customising to really create that wow factor.
Keep an eye out for bargains
Keeping an eye out for other girls selling things on means you can pick up some really beautiful dresses or costumes for a fraction of the price. Custom outfits, especially showgirl costumes, can run into the hundreds or even thousands, so there is no shame in second hand.
Finally, shoes. The most important consideration with shoes are; pick ones you can walk in, whatever the heel size! It is better to sacrifice an inch or two and have something you can work with…ahem. Stripper shoes are ideal as they are designed to be comfortable whilst dancing. Heels always lengthen legs and make your bum look good. Perspex heels aren’t mandatory though, if you have a pair of sexy shoes that turn you into a goddess and are comfortable then go for it!
